My Rights

Lesson 3

Where do my rights come from?

What do we already know?

With your group, on post-its, write down the things that you already know about rights and stick them on to your concept maps.
We will categorize what the children have written down and as a class will address the ideas written.
We will clarify any unsure information by groups researching the interactive Declaration on the UN website found here.

Like all people, children have rights.
When did your rights begin? Are rights the same for everybody?
Do we all begin life as equals?

Group Activity:

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out rights in 54 articles which can be categorized under the following headings:

- protection
- services
- self

In your groups, distribute as best you can, the 54 articles you have on the rights of the child among the 3 headings above.
[They are also found digitally below]

Real stories
In your groups read the following stories from the UN Human Rights Commission.

Group 1 - Maya
Group 2 - Amerigo
Group 3 - Gopi
Group 4 - Sean
Group 5 - Patricio

With your group, identify and discuss the rights that these children do not have.
Can you as children too relate to any parts of their lives?
One member from each group will present each case to the class

Back to our concept maps...

What do you now know about rights that you can add in to your concept maps?

Who can you contact if you want to report a violation of your rights?

What can you do if you know someone who is not being treated fairly?
Is it always easy to report violations of rights?
