Wants v Needs

Lesson 2:

What do I really need?

Discuss the following statement with your group:
Everybody in our world has wants and needs. These are different for every person.
What are wants?
What are needs?

Watch and discuss:
Look at how these young children describe wants and needs - are yours the same or different?

Activity:
In groups of 4, categorize your printed cards (online here) into two rows; wants and needs.
What are the different or similar choices that groups have made?
In your group, create a top 3 for 'Wants' and 'Needs' that you think every person should have.
Discuss as class.

Activity:
Using the case studies of the teachers found here from around the world, each group has to create a list of the basic needs that these teachers and classes have.
What are the differences between the groups?
What does this tell us about wants and needs?
Is this the same list of top 3 needs that you created earlier?

Classroom Display:
Groups will paste their case studies and their top needs and wants for these families on A3 paper and we will put on display.
